current mood: giddy
current song: "Twilight" - Nathan Impellizzeri
So, I am here to give a full account of how fantastic my evening was last night (I might include a few details I didn't on Fan Forum). I went to a concert of The Fray with opening act Nathan Impellizzeri. The Fray is now officially my favorite band, and Nathan is now officially my favorite solo artist. It was a night that I wish I could live over and over again.
There was confusion about what time the show was actually going to be starting...every source said something different. So my friend and I ended up arriving at the venue a little early - while Nathan was still doing his soundcheck. I had just seen his webpage earlier that day, and my first thought on seeing him was that he looked way better in person. So anyway, there weren't many people there yet, and I noticed that he kept looking over at me...making eye contact. I LOVED it. LOL. About a half-hour after he finished his soundcheck, he came back out and started the show - and my friend and I were right in the front row. He's so charismatic. He kept communicating with the audience - he was really cute. And he obviously was very passionate about what he was doing. I noticed that he kept leaning his head closer and closer to the keyboard - like he just couldn't get close enough to it. LOL. And at other times, he had so much energy that he couldn't stand to just sit on the stool while he was playing...he kept jumping up. His voice sounds a lot like Gavin DeGraw's live - but I personally liked Nathan better than Gavin - and that is a gigantic compliment because Gavin rocked my world when I saw him about a year and a half ago. My favorite song by Nathan was "Twilight". It's a great mix of angst and hope...and he really drove it home in his performance.
After Nathan had finished and while they were setting the stage up for The Fray, I went to buy Nathan's EP. And the girls told me that I could talk to him if I wanted because he'd be coming out in just a few minutes. So I waited. =) And I'm so glad that I did. He is just the most adorable thing in the world. I wanted to ask him if he wanted a groupie, because I'd totally leave school for him. Anyway, he signed the album cover for me, and then I asked him if he was familiar with Gavin DeGraw. He said that he didn't know him personally, but definitely knew of him. I told him that I'd seen Gavin a year or two ago...and that I was even more impressed with him (Nathan). He was really shocked by such a compliment - he said something like, "Wow. That's so sweet of you say. Thanks so much." As he was saying that - he reached out and sort of stroked my arm. I nearly passed out. Then when I got back with my friend who had the camera, we went back to Nathan for pictures, which he gladly allowed. Seriously - it is beyond me how in the world he doesn't have a record contract...he's incredibly talented and a sweet guy on top of that. ***Check out the link to my pictures at the bottom of the post.***
Now, on to The Fray...
They rocked the place. I had seen a fantastic video of them performing live in Denver (where they're from), but wow...they're always that good. Like Nathan, their CD cannot compare the experience of seeing them live. All of the members of the band were so in-the-moment and fresh. It was great. They made me scream at the top of my lungs for about an hour and a half and jump around all over the place - and since I'm normally quite shy and reserved, that's a big deal. Isaac and Joe were both wonderful on vocals. The band performed every song on their new album (How to Save a Life) - opening with "How to Save a Life" and closing the show with "She Is". They also threw in a cover of "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by Credence Clearwater Revival, and of course the cover was as great as their original material. The crowd was so into the show...nearly everyone in the audience was singing along with the band word-for-word. The guys were really surprised that everyone already knew all the lyrics since the new album JUST came out. Isaac was so cute, he was like, "Wow, you guys are good," and he had the crowd singing back-up on "Over My Head (Cable Car)" while he was on lead. He also said that the band was really nervous about the new record, because they didn't know if they'd hit the mark or not - if anyone would catch onto it. When I was talking to them later, I let them know that they definitely hit the mark on the new album. Interesting bit of trivia - apparently Isaac wrote the song "How to Save a Life" about his experience mentoring a teen crack-addict. I was surprised because a lot of artists seem like they're at least slightly tipsy when they perform...from drinking or partaking of other substances beforehand (or heck, even during) a show. But Nathan and The Fray all seemed to be totally sober (I actually saw them drinking Coke afterward) - I guess Isaac having been a mentor had something to do with that. And I didn't realize it, but apparently Nathan's stuff is actually considered Christian music. The lyrics are sort of broad so that songs could be interpretted in different ways (I guess sort of like Switchfoot in that sense). Anyway, when I ripped the CD, it had "Religious" listed under the genre. Back to the point - it was great to see performers performing in a clear state-of-mind. Near the end of The Fray's set, they said to stick around because they'd stay there until they'd met every single person that wanted to meet them. My friend and I went outside after the end of the show to catch some air on the deck before going back to meet the band, but the band came walking out onto the deck right behind us. =) So we didn't have to wait forever, and we actually had whole conversations with them. Oh, another highlight of the evening: When my friend and I were talking with Joe, and then asked for a picture, he said, "Sure. But I'm really sweaty and gross. I hope you don't mind." And of course - we didn't mind. :)
So, I just cannot praise Nathan and The Fray enough - it was an incredible night of music with really humble and nice performers. Like I said, I wish I could relive the night over and over again. And, here's a link to my Webshots account where you can see my pics from that event (and there's another random album there). There should be a picture or two not included in my post on Fan Forum.
